Unloading of windmill components at Baltic Container Terminal in Poland
The ICTSI Breakbulk Focus Group recently completed two sessions on Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) as part of the group’s aim to foster greater synergy among participating ICTSI terminals.
The session opened with remarks from Edmundo Trazo, HSSE Global Director. He emphasized that there is no one-size-fits-all best practice in breakbulk operations. Nonetheless, terminals are encouraged to improve safety protocols by continuously sharing effective strategies to handling various breakbulk cargoes.
The sessions also delved into the experiences of each participating terminal, focusing on their most challenging lifts. These discussions provided insights into obstacles such as mixed and poor stowage factors, as well as the limited information provided to discharging ports, among other issues. The terminals demonstrated remarkable resilience in navigating these difficulties, leading to improved operations and the implementation of preventive and corrective measures.
In the closing remarks, Lee Wilson, HSSE Advisor for ICTSI’s Manila terminals, congratulated participants on their success stories and underscored the importance of proper supervision and communication in breakbulk operations. He concluded with a simple yet impactful message: plan the lift and lift with the plan.
